LANDSCAPE & COLOR: An Oil Painting Intensive

30 minutes from Staunton or Waynesboro, 1 hour from Roanoke, Charlottesville or Harrisonburg
Spend two days immersed in color, painting the Virginia landscape as summer turns to fall. Working from a limited palette, students will learn a clear framework for color mixing and a direct approach to capturing light and form. We will deeply explore how value, temperature, and saturation interact to create the color relationships we see in nature. The changing of the seasons is a special time to sharpen our perceptual skills. The fading greens of late summer and the early golds of fall offer subtle, ever-shifting colors to observe and mix. Beyond skill building, the workshop is an invitation to slow down and practice patience & presence in a beautiful setting. All experience levels welcome. Whether you’re new to color theory or want to deepen your understanding, you’ll leave with fundamentals you can apply to any subject.

Immerse yourself in the seasonal changes and rural beauty of Albemarle County as we paint outdoors at a historic farm near Batesville, VA. Working from observation, we will build foundational skills while exploring color, light, shape, composition, and mark-making. The beauty and complexity of nature will be our muse as we learn to simplify forms, untangle the parts from the whole, and create dynamic paintings that reflect a powerful and personalized visual language. Students will learn a framework for observational painting that is independent of style, allowing for the discovery of their own artistic temperament and authentic interpretation of the natural world. We offer both Spring and Fall Sessions of Plein Air Painting in Batesville. It is my great joy to share my love of painting with you in this very special setting. In the winter, we offer indoor studio classes at Phaeton Gallery in downtown Charlottesville, working from still life, plants, and flowers.
