“The outer situation of your life and whatever happens there is the surface of the lake. Sometimes calm, sometimes windy and rough, according to the cycles and seasons. Deep down, however, the lake is always undisturbed. You are the whole lake, not just the surface, and you are in touch with your own depth, which remains absolutely still.” –-Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now
In November 2018 I participated in an immersive painting retreat at Lake Logan, North Carolina. I was immediately drawn to this landscape of rippling wind, the many dynamic reflections, the illusory mirrored surface, the passing fog and mist. I learned how a painting can be about the experience of both stillness and change. Following my return to the studio, I continued working with variations on the Lake Logan motif. This series became a kind of meditation for me, as I observed my own mercurial thoughts and emotions ripple out, the fog of uncertainty descend, and the glimmers of discovery break through. The process of painting itself is an exercise in courage and compassion, acceptance and change, knowing and questioning. I love this process and it is why I continue to show up in the studio day after day.
